The government is ready to launch an enquiry to see if Facebook had any role to play in unfairly influencing elections in the country, union minister for electronics and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad told ET in an interview on Wednesday, and if required will summon Mark Zuckerberg, founder of the American social networking company, for an explanation
Earlier at a press conference, Prasad, who is a senior leader of the ruling NDA, accused the Congress party of having links with Cambridge Analytica. He cited reports which suggest that the Congress party may be in discussions with the firm for a partnership ahead of the 2019 general elections.
The minister’s remarks come in the wake of allegations that British data firm Cambridge Analytica accessed personal information of nearly 50 million Facebook users, without explicit consent. This data was allegedly used to influence polls across the world including the Presidential election in the US in 2016.
Cambridge Analytica’s local affiliate in India — Ovleno Business Intelligence (OBI) —has claimed to have influenced elections in the country according to its website, which was suddenly shut on Wednesday evening. “Account has been suspended” reads a message on the website. OBI is run by Amrish Tyagi, son of JDU leader KC Tyagi. Cambridge Analytica lists the work it did in the 2010 Bihar elections as a case study on its website.
